Lee Joon-Seok:
Birthday Editorial
A birthday portrait series shaped by warmth, humour and the people around him.

For Joon-Seok’s birthday, the strongest moments were never really about the setup. They came in the reactions around it — the surprise settling in, the people gathered close and the quieter moments that followed once the candles were gone.

The evening moved between the obvious birthday moments and the ones that happened around them — a toast, a joke from across the table, someone reaching back for another photograph. Nothing needed to become bigger than it was.
That informality is what gives the series its character. Joon-Seok is still clearly being photographed, but the camera never becomes more important than the night itself.

The last frames are quieter. The celebration gives way to something more personal: the messages left for him, held long enough to read rather than simply photographed and put aside.
A birthday editorial, in the end, but also a record of the people who were there.
